North West Senior Open / Commonwealth Tournament, Singapore

Pinewood Judo Club had its first tournament of 2010 last weekend at the North West senior and veteran’s competition; the two previous events had been cancelled due to bad weather. The event was held at the Sutton Leisure Centre in St Helens Merseyside.

Megan Fletcher fought well to win the gold medal in the under 70 kgs weight group. This was a good start to the year, an excellent warm up for future events.

Geoff Torrington did well to win a silver medal in the veteran’s under 100 kgs weight group. Dominique Brown also had a good day winning the silver medal at under 63 kgs in the blue belt grade and under section.

The fourth Pinewood member fighting was Jonathan Purssey in the black belt section at under 90 kgs. He reached the semi final but was forced to withdraw because he sprained some neck muscles. He has an important event at Vise Belgium next week, so decided not to take the risk of aggravating the muscles further.

Jonathan fought in the Commonwealth Tournament at Singapore two weekends ago with exceptional success. He won silver at under 90 kgs and a gold medal in the open weight group.

Last Friday the club visited the Hayling Island club for a most enjoyable training session to warm up for the tournaments to come. They will be fighting contests every week from now on with many foreign trips planned, so they look forward to a busy time.
