2010 Nov – Bev Price

All sections of the Pinewood Judo Club were fighting in the Bev Price memorial team championship last Sunder. The event was held at the Walsall Campus and it was well attended. The teams were all three Judoka strong and the largest number of teams ever was in attendance.

The Pinewood squad had an excellent day winning three gold, four silver and one bronze trophy. The boys light weight team of James Widman, Christian Tepper and George Lawes were first to fight and they won silver.

The girls light weight team went second and the Pinewood squad took gold and silver. In first place were Holly Eccles, Amy Adams and Eva Thomas. In second place were Emily Brown, Kiera Bateman and Jenny Roberts.

The boy’s heavy weight team of Dominic Naylor, Ben Roberts and Ben Jones all fought superbly to win gold. The girl’s heavy weight team of Emma Pang, Leah Blair and Nicole Brown won the silver place; they were giving a lot weight away because the club is short of heavier girls.

The men’s Kyu grade (coloured belts) did well; they only had two fighters which meant they both had to win every fight. The two were Matthew Sallis and Samson Omonua, in fact Samson won all of his fights with some ease but the Pinewood fighter of the day must be Matthew. He is still a youth but he produced some brilliant performances against some very strong men.

The men’s black belt team of Jason Picton, Ben Fletcher and Goff Torrington won bronze in a very strong group. The ladies team of Sarah Pang, Laura Tapping and Sian Fairbrother won the silver trophy. This was an excellent result because the large number of teams entered was of a high quality too.
