Last Sunday Pinewood Coach Don Werner had a small squad of seven fighting in the Goole Judo Club’s Championships for children under 12 and under 17 years. Pinewood only had Judoka in the under 17 group and they had some excellent results. They won 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals.
First to fight was Declan White in the under 38 kgs weight group and he won the silver medal. Tom Lichter also fought well to win bronze at under 50 kgs. Harvey Williams stormed his way to a gold medal at under 66 kgs. He produced some superb judo and in the final fight scored a clean throw with a leg sweep. Every Judoka likes to win with this throw, it is pure Judo and with little effort you can put down much larger opponents.
The girls also had a great result, Holly Eccles won gold at under 40 kgs, Keira Bateman won gold under 44 kgs, Niamh White equalled her brother’s score with silver at under 52 kgs and Jade Eccles won gold at under 57 kgs with some excellent standing and ground work Judo.
Also on Sunday, fighting in the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast Olivia Spellman had an amazing day. She won the silver medal at under 52 kgs in the junior ranking event and a gold medal in the Cadet ranking section.
